Concussions and traumatic brain injury
Concussions are considered to be a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) that alters the way your brain functions. They have been the focus of many new stories during the last decade, and they are most commonly highlighted around the field of professional and competitive level sports.
More than one million concussions are reported every year by a wide range of individuals, common causes include:
- Motor vehicle accidents
- Ski accidents
- Athletic/sport-related injuries
It is important to remember that all concussions are serious.
Many people don’t realize how serious a concussion can be, and how important it is to determine the extent of the injury. Concussions can have long-lasting effects if not diagnosed and properly treated.
Diagnosing a concussion
If you or a loved one has suffered any kind of trauma to the head, for any reason, be sure to look out for the following symptoms:
- Physical signs
- Loss of consciousness
- Double or blurry vision
- Cognitive signs
- Difficulty concentrating or comprehending
- Memory loss
- Feelings of being “just not right” or in a fog
If you or a loved one are experiencing the above symptoms, visit your nearest emergency room. Your physician can order an MRI scan, which is essential to identifying concussions in all patients.
MRI studies of the brain can help diagnose the severity of the concussion.
The Rose neurosciences program provides leading treatment for epilepsy. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder marked by chronic, recurrent seizures associated with abnormal electrical activity in the brain. We offer an interdisciplinary team of experts, world-class facilities and specialized expertise in diagnosing, treating and managing epilepsy symptoms.
Epilepsy, and other seizure disorders, can be hard to diagnose because patients do not always seek treatment for seizures, and when they do, they may not be able to accurately describe their symptoms. If you or a loved one are suspected of having seizures, we can help you find the source of these symptoms and rule out more serious conditions.
At Rose, we utilize advanced technology to evaluate and diagnose epilepsy. Our epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) provides continuous monitoring, private rooms and individualized care to patients with epilepsy symptoms. The epilepsy monitoring unit at Rose is staffed by a 24/7 collaborative team and includes state-of-the-art equipment for customized monitoring and evaluation of brainwave activity.
If a patient is diagnosed with epilepsy, out team works to develop an individualized treatment plan to address each patient’s unique symptoms and guide them through comprehensive management strategies.
Our neuro-diagnostic department offers in-patient and out-patient monitoring of brain activity to detect the neurological cause of symptoms. Some patients undergo a 30 to 90 minute brain scan, while other patients remain in our epilepsy monitoring unit for up to one week of long-term monitoring. Our patients enjoy several amenities, including space for friends and family, exercise equipment, entertainment and more.
